Jerry

When my wife was pregnant with our first child she was going to school in a building that also had an abortion clinic in it. She was about 4 months along and was showing a little. Every time she went to school they had security that had to escort her through a crazy mob of protestors who grabbed at her yelling things like "Dont kill your baby!!"

Mariah, 19

Shortly after turning 18 and in my final semester of high school, I found out I was pregnant by my boyfriend of two years.

In 2000, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved RU 486. It is a safe, non-surgical way for women to terminate an unintended pregnancy.

RU 486 is also known as mifepristone. It works within the first nine weeks of a pregnancy. Its development represents a huge step forward for women's reproductive health.

The Challenge

Anti-choice politicians and groups are doing everything they can to restrict women's access to RU 486, even though it is proven to be very safe.

  • Some groups want to remove RU 486 from the market for no reason.
  • They also deliberately try to confuse RU 486 with emergency contraception (EC).

It's really important that you understand that RU 486 is not EC.

  • EC acts like birth control
  • Prevents pregnancy if taken soon afer sex
  • Does not cause abortion

Our Solution

RU 486 is a safe and legal option that women should have access to if they want to end a pregnancy within the first nine weeks. Sound science and protecting women's health – not politics – should guide medical decisions.

Anti-choice politicians shouldn't be allowed to block women's access to safe medication.
