Health-Reform Law is a Win for Women’s Health

Organization joins progressive allies on steps of Supreme Court to counter repeal efforts that would take away increased access to prenatal care and contraceptive coverage

Washington, D.C.—Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, said her organization will mobilize its supporters to stand up for the Affordable Care Act as opponents of health reform call on the Supreme Court to overturn the law.

"Since anti-choice groups and their allies have decided to take their War on Women to the Supreme Court, we are meeting them at the steps," Keenan said. "The Affordable Care Act marks the greatest advance for women’s health in a generation. This law will bring 30 million Americans into a health-care system that includes affordable family-planning services, better access to contraception, and maternity care."

Keenan said the attacks on the health-reform law are part of an ongoing campaign by anti-choice politicians to make it harder for women to get the health care they need. The most recent debate has been on President Obama’s policy to provide contraceptive coverage for women. The Senate narrowly rejected a measure that would have allowed insurers and corporations to deny women birth-control coverage. In addition, these same politicians refused to challenge radio personality Rush Limbaugh after he called a female law student who spoke out in favor of the president’s policy a "slut" and a "prostitute."

"The attacks on the health-reform law are targeting women in the same way as the legislative attacks on contraception and ugly rhetoric that have made headlines in the last month," Keenan said. "If the court strikes down this law, better coverage of prenatal care and contraceptives for millions of women could disappear. Insurance companies could go back to charging women more money for health-care services than men. That’s why we must stand with President Obama and women across this country in supporting this important law."

In addition to recruiting people to participate in visibility events outside the Supreme Court, NARAL Pro-Choice America is mobilizing its supporters to show their support for the law through email alerts, Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr.
